Traditional Fundamentals This lecture introduces the course with a brief overview of traditional astrology and criticisms of it; discusses the classical notion of sect and how it separates horoscopes into two distinct groups (nocturnal and diurnal) to which according to tradition, two different sets of rules apply; and finally, classifies the planets elementally according to the understanding of the Greek Philosopher Empedocles 2. Essential Dignity Essential dignity describes the intrinsic strength of a classical planet based on its zodiacal placement. 3. Planetary Fortitudes, Debilities &Joys While essential dignity reveals a planet’s intrinsic strength, fortitudes, debilities, and joys, being based on house placement and connections to the angles can tell the astrologer something about a planet’s ability to act: its agency. 4. Temperament Temperament theory says that characteristic or habitual inclinations in the human person can be described as resulting from combinations of four “humors” (choleric, melancholic, sanguine, and phlegmatic) that correspond with the four elements (fire, earth, air, and water). 5.
