Kanye West | The Rich Life | Forbes Billionaire ?

Before They Were Famous - A podcast by Michael McCrudden

Somewhere in the flux of creative musical genius and muddled social crusader that makes up the mind of Kanye West also resides a desire for the world to see him as he is, a billionaire. When Forbes omitted him from their most recent Billionaires list this past March, Kanye didn’t take it sitting down. He’s been preaching to the world that he’s a billionaire for a while now and he’s finally got the receipts and product to prove it. After a series of disgruntled tweets and even more incendiary text messages to the staff at Forbes, Kanye’s wealth was reexamined and last week Forbes admitted to their mistake. Kanye West IS a billionaire, only maybe not quite as big of a one as he says he is. Kanye West, exaggerating?? No way. Next, you’re gonna tell me the sky is blue and that Carole Baskin didn’t kill her husband. Guys, part of Kanye’s appeal is that he’s ALWAYS exaggerating, it makes the mythology of his brand and celebrity all the more appealing and he knows it. Forbes considered West’s debt, assets, and expenses and came out with a total net worth of $1.3 Billion, which is impressive, but about $2 Billion less than Kanye says he’s worth. So, who’s right? Look, I’m not gonna pretend to be a lawyer with knowledge of the ins and outs of every complicated legal document that accounts for every last penny, but what I can do is take you guys through a ride of Kanye’s bank account, a tale that includes crazy expensive mansions, the fastest cars, a shoe empire, and yes, even wildly inventive public housing ideas. At the end of it all, you guys can decide for yourself, is Kanye as rich as he says he is or did Forbes get it right?
