On this episode I’m talking to writer, director, and performer, Hugo Chiarella who is currently the Resident Director of the UK and Ireland Tour of Les Misérables. Originally from Australia, he wrote the book and lyrics for the musicals DreamSong and Evie May. As a performer he has appeared as Mendel in Australasian tour of Fiddler on The Roof with Topol, as well as multiple productions of Les Misérables all around the world including the original staging in London's West End. He was also the host of the Australian children's television series Magical Tales: Surprises!. He previously held the position of development producer at Fuel theatre in London overseeing their new work development, and he also creates new work through the company Unlikely Productions who made the critically acclaimed production of The Apologists which played a sold out season in Sydney.I had such a great chat with Hugo about the impact Les Mis has had on his life and career since he was a kid, what Grantaire’s character means to fans, what it’s going to be like for the show to come back after COVID, and so much more!Watch the web series As Actors on YouTube with Hugo and his Les Mis cast-mate, Tamlyn HendersonPurchase the Live Australian Cast Recording of Evie May on iTunesThanks for listening and be sure to follow me on Instagram @beyondthebarricadepodcast!
