The imagery used by the Book of Mormon to depict hell finds ample parallel in the ancient world. Nephi, with his background as a learned Israelite with training in Egyptian scribal practice, may have drawn broadly from his ancient Near Eastern cultural backdrop in rendering his theological imagery.
