Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The most famous group of people that came to Ireland are the people of the Goddess Danu. Known as “God like” or to have the powers of the Gods, this chapter of Irish Myth from the Mythic Cycles, offers us the first cast of characters we come back to again and again. Get to know the name of the father God, the Dagda, or the druid Bírog of the mountains, because these characters will reappear again and again in Irish stories. They burned their boats upon landing on the shore of the island, to show they were here to stay. These were the people who went north. We know little of their journey, or who exactly the Goddess was they took their name from, but we do know they learned magic in the northern islands, and brought back four treasures with them. With new found power, they felt entitled to the land… but the land was not empty. The Fir Bolg would have to figure out what to do with these newcomers. And to do that they sent the greatest warrior they had, Sreng. But he did not expect what awaited him when the smoke of the burning boats cleared. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our post-show chat coming out this Sunday.
