Trying to be a Good Person

Everybody's trying so hard to be a good person. It's quite touching. But I don't know if trying to be a good person results in becoming a better person, except as a kind of prayer that attracts the necessary experiences that change you into a person who acts more consistently from love, empathy, compassion, service.
