Her truth. But it is a Truth that many will identify with. It was during her Masters at UAL Chelsea College of Arts, her divorce and reaching some of the lowest points of her life during 2018 that she found an invincible strength within her as a result of a simple understanding of life. "All my life I felt like I wasn’t living my true self – I was living a life for others. I had to be the best wife, the best mum, the best daughter, the best me. But the truth was I didn’t know who I was, or if I had ever known me at all." Gilbert's bold and beautiful large-scale abstract paintings were born out of constant uncovering and rediscovering the real Joanna Gilbert. An investigation into interaction - with herself, with those around her and with the world we experience. Since graduating from Chelsea UAL with a distinction in a Master of Fine Arts, Gilbert has come into her own. She has shed her fear of failure and of striving to meet the expectations of others. In return, there is a wiser, more truthful understanding of life that she wished she had known when she was a teenager. Joanna is currently represented by AVIVSON Gallery, London. Despite the turbulent year, she has had 2 solo shows in 2020: ‘Limitless’ during May, and ‘Freedom’ during Nov / Dec. 2021 and 2021 is looking promising with another solo show scheduled for April and she will also be shown in the Karlsruhe Art Fair, Germany during May 2021. Inspired by life and her involvement with a mental health non-profit called iheart, (who are educating young people on how to uncover their innate wellbeing); Joanna has shed her fear of failure, of living up to the expectations of others and is now living her true self. Joanna’s passion and motivation to inspire others comes across through conversation and she has recently been asked to speak to secondary school children and a Pupil Referral Unit – on how ‘Art is Everywhere, we just need to walk with our eyes and hearts open.’
