The US presidential election is still months away, but the dozens of other countries that have already had elections – or are preparing for them – are already fighting misinformation and deception that is being spread across the Internet using generative AI tools, which have made lies more convincing than ever. It’s hardly surprising, then, that a new report from OpenAI found that several foreign governments have been actively using ChatGPT to try to influence elections in the US and elsewhere. Engadget reports that Russian, Chinese, Iranian, and Israeli hackers were caught and banned after trying to use AI to generate news headlines, create fake comments disparaging Ukraine, and debug software tools designed to saturate social media networks. You may not realize it, but such campaigns are out there and they’re working overtime to feed you propaganda – so this election season, approach all online information with caution, and don’t believe anything that you can’t independently verify.
