One of the most important things you can do to protect your data, and that of your company, is to make sure you’re putting in the effort to use strong and unique passwords to protect your accounts – and that you change them regularly. If a password is easy for you to remember, it’s probably easy for a cyber criminal to guess – so if you’re using 123456, your birthday, or the name of a pet – you should change it to something more complex. A strong password should combine uppercase and lowercase letters, with at least one number and one punctuation mark – and it should be at least 16 characters long. You can also use long passphrases combining 4 to 7 unrelated words. By using password management software – either a standalone app or the one built into your web browser – you can set long, complicated passwords and let the password manager automatically fill them in on your desktop, laptop, and smartphone. Finally, be sure to regularly change passwords for your most important services – like work portals, core systems, and collaboration – so that even if they are caught up in a data breach, they will no longer give cyber criminals access to your work and home systems.
