To understand why, we go to Ohio’s Bazetta township, which lost more than $100,000 to cybercriminals after the township fiscal officer’s Microsoft Office 365 account was hacked. It was an all-too-familiar story: thieves used the officer’s email account to send an official-looking message advising new account details that were used for transfers from the only person overseeing the town’s funds. Here’s the kicker: the email account was previously secured using MFA – but the fiscal officer admitted to asking for the extra layer of authentication to be turned off. No wonder cybersecurity authorities around the world continually talk about the importance of MFA.
