A Woodwose Encounter Rugeley circa 1916 - Witness Report Stefan: “Hi Deborah, I wanted to thank you for your continued efforts in logging all the sightings and stories that come your way - in particular, the British wildman or woodwose encounters which I am especially interested in.I was brought up in Rugeley during the 1960s which is very close to Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. I don't know if you know, but during the first and second world wars, there were two large military camps on Cannock Chase and my friend's grandfather was stationed there during the First World War. His name was Ron and he once told me and my friend about the German prisoners of war that were kept there and how they had been afraid to try and escape into the forests because some of them had seen a wild, hairy man moving around in the trees. He and his fellow soldiers used to mock the Germans about this and thought they were just afraid of being caught and shot or that they were secretly working on other escape ideas and were trying to avoid suspicion.
