Judith Jones of Knopf was one of the most legendary editors around. Not only did she shepherd Julia Child’s masterpiece, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, early in her career, but she also rescued The Diary of Anne Frank from the slush pile as a young assistant in the Paris office of Doubleday.
