Reframing the EU’s China Strategy : where Germany stands
European Guanxi Podcast - A podcast by European Guanxi

Welcome back to the European Guanxi podcast. A new podcast produced by European Guanxi - a network of European scholars, students and professionals coming together on a platform of debate, discussion and analysis of EU and China relations. On our third episode, we will be welcoming an amazing journalist and author, Noah Barkin, who will provide us with more clarity on EU-China relations, and more specifically the nature and importance of Sino-German relations. In the last few years we have seen Western governments adopting an increasingly defiant position regarding China, be it on issues relating to national security, economic competition or human rights issues. Worldwide, the narrative of engagement with China is undergoing a monumental shift. The emergence of these complaints mark an indisputable shift in government priorities, yet there is still little uniform action being taken, with many tensions and disagreements between parties, as is the case in Germany, and also within the E.U. where different national interests prevent the adoption of a coherent and common China strategy.Germany's current government is divided over the reframing of its relationship with China, but it ultimately has to make do with the new realities of very little space for close political engagement with China. The EU now pursues a "derisking" approach which puts national security and the diversification of resources at the top of the agenda. Noah Barkin has made clear that Sino-German relations and, by implication, EU-China relations are no longer primarily defined by economic interests but also by normative and value-based considerations. We would love to know what your opinions are on Sino-Eu relations and, in particular the Sino-German relations, do you agree with Noah Barkin?Let us know in our social media!Thank you for tuning in to our European Guanxi Podcast.
