Studies indicate that 40% to 50% of athletes have experienced anything from mild harassment to severe abuse. During the mid-90s reports of sexual abuse of child athletes in sport started to emerge in the UK. By the mid-2000s, child protection and safeguarding procedures had been introduced in to sport, making the country one of the first in the world to adopt such measures. The 3-time Olympic Champion and the first British winner of the Tour de France in 2012, Bradley Wiggins, was one of many athletes who spoke out and revealed that he was groomed and sexually abused by a coach at the age of 13. There has been much criticism of our laws, with some saying that there is a wide gap, allowing perpetrators to mask themselves as ‘sports coaches’, and able to get away with their heinous crimes of abuse. An independent enquiry stated that ‘child abuse in sport has been covered up for decades’. In this episode Hatti Suvari and senior Barrister Cameron Brown KC bring you insights in to this topic, from what is meant by child safeguarding in sport, to the new planned laws to protect and safeguard children. A key part of child safeguarding is spreading the message about keeping children safe, and building a culture of always acting in the best interest of all children.#safeguarding #childreninsport #sportscoaches #abuse #emotionalabuse #mentalabuse #childsafety #codeofconduct #criminaloffence #legallearnig #getlegallyspeaking #hattisuvari #cameronbrownkc Hosted on Acast.
