I Am Fabulous - Nicola Bedenham

Story number six is here ❤️ My next story was written and illustrated by Nicola Bedenham @miss_nb2020 for her brother Christopher. I first met Nicola through my cousin Divya @houseinthesouth7 back in 2017. Here we are in 2021 and I have the absolute privilege of reading her inspiring story: “I Am Fabulous” “I Am Fabulous” is a heartfelt story inspired by the author’s transgender brother, who is on the Autistic spectrum and their childhood growing up. Nicola Bedenham: “It has been a very long journey, to turn what seemed like an impossible situation into a positive one” “It all started with the painting that features in the book. I made it originally as a way of reaching out to my brother when he became homeless and would not communicate verbally. I thought by making a piece of positive celebratory artwork for him, it would evoke a feeling of love and connection and he would make contact again. I made flyers with the image of the painting and distributed them around the area in London that he had been sighted. Thankfully, he was found and now lives with our parents.” “A few years later, the idea for the story popped into my head. I then decided to make a book for him so he could remember all the positive things from our childhood and our experiences together. Everything in the book had to be recognisable and familiar to him due to his Autism.” “It took about three years to draw all the illustrations and write and rewrite the story. My daughter, Holly @hollydeimbacher then designed the book and made it look beautiful” I hope this book resonates with anyone who is a creative free spirit and encourages you to believe in yourself, celebrating who you are through the power of art.” Nicola Bedenham is an art teacher and worked throughout the pandemic supporting key worker children. She also set online art projects for the whole school do to at home. Nicola, you should certainly feel proud and you truly are an inspiration.
