131: How We Homeschool Through A Pandemic, Part 2
Homeschool Unrefined - A podcast by Maren Goerss and Angela Sizer - Mondays

We’re gonna be here weekly for a while to process with you through this pandemic because, well, 1) we’re home anyway and 2) we want to laugh, encourage each other, and get real about homeschool. We cover two big topics: “The State of the Family” (what’s going on for each of us) and “The Nitty Gritty” (what we are ACTUALLY doing for homeschool and life). Distance learning, homeschooling, working spouses, spouses at home, prioritizing mental health for ourselves and our families, navigating all the new resources, figuring out routines... We’re talking about ALL. OF. IT. Highlights from this episode -How much info do we share with our kids? Some kids are helped by having information; others are helped by being shielded from it. Give yourself credit for navigating all of this. -How do we balance a flexible routine with free time? How do we adapt when we're feeling out of balance? We need something in place to anchor us, but we also need open-ended time. -Are you dealing with FOMO from all the amazing new online resources that are available?! Give yourself permission to NOT have to take advantage of everything. You can skip some amazing good things. It’s ok. -Easy things are hard right now. Hard things are harder right now. Give yourself grace for not doing all the things all the time. -Being told what to do all day is hard. Our kids need choice and freedom to explore their own interests for their own wellbeing. -Our kids are doing their best under these circumstances, too. Remember, just because our kids can do something once (e.g. bake cookies, clean up their mess, etc.) doesn’t mean they can then always do it after that without support. -The priority is everyone’s mental health. How can we build our days to make sure everyone’s mental health is elevated?
