Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Dr. Chaya Lieba Kobernick)

Hope to Recharge - A podcast by Matana Poupko Jacobs

Borderline Personality disorder is often stigmatized and rarely mentioned in public circles as a topic of discussion. There is much shame around it and those diagnosed with it often keep it clandestine and private so as not to be exposed for the darkness they carry within them. Dr. Kobernick is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Founder and Director of The CBT/DBT Center. DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy which is a "behavior therapy". She helps patients target behaviors in order to affect how they are feeling. The additional layer here is Dialectics - which is a type of philosophy that states that there are always multiple truths and more than one way of looking at something in our world. This is important because it helps us to see the grays rather than getting stuck in the black and white. Having big emotions is a wonderful thing. People with big emotions can be the best artists, musicians, lovers, parents and nurturers. But, those emotions need to be navigated with the right skills and tools. Learning mindfulness and how to listen to her emotions helped Dr. Kobernick in her own childhood with big emotions.  The two elements that Dr. Kobernick focuses on when she treats patients with DBT are acceptance and change. So, the way it works is at any given moment a patient needs to accept reality as it is and they are working towards change in their lives. They both - acceptance and change - need to exist. You cannot push for change if you are not in acceptance. Thank you for listening to Hope to Recharge! if we are important to you, help us out and Leave us a review on iTunes.
