The Body-Mind Connection (Atara Weisberger)
Hope to Recharge - A podcast by Matana Poupko Jacobs

Atara Weisberger is an expert on the connection between our mental and physical health. She coaches people to improve their lives through nutrition and movement. She shares her experience with coaching health and wellness, how to recognize and choose to change negative habits, and the mental health benefits of a good diet and exercise. Atara helped me with my own struggle to eat healthy food before dinnertime, asking what values were driving my desire to stop eating cake in the afternoons. I know how interconnected physical and mental health are, and I need to make good choices for both in order to feel my best overall. I know there are long-term implications of poor daily choices, and I want to help my future self thrive, as I work to give my family the best at dinner every night. She suggested I change my mindset, so that I don't feel obligated to give up the foods that bring me so much joy, but choose instead to add something which I know will make my body feel good, versus the yummy snack that I enjoy more. Everything in our bodies, including our minds, is intertwined. Nutritious food provides us with energy and the ability to focus so that we can accomplish what we need to. Exercise has been proven to release hormones in the brain that make us feel good emotionally. Yet, when someone is feeling unhappy, the current model tells doctors to immediately prescribe them strong medications before providing them with strategies to solve the issue with their own body. Why don't they prescribe a trial of an exercise regimen for 30 days the same way they do with drugs? It is possible to eat a safe and healthy diet while on a budget and there are certain foods that do not need to be purchased organically. There are even foods that should just be avoided altogether. For a little homework, search for the lists she discusses in this eye opening episode to find out which foods have the most chemicals. And the reality is, there's nothing in us that is separate.” @AtaraWeisberger @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “What you want to ask yourself is why: Why is that important to me? And the why becomes your anchor. Because if you just layer a behavior on top of the rest of your life, then any small thing that comes along can just kind of knock it off, whatever your goals are, if they're sitting on that surface level of just, I think, or I should.” @AtaraWeisberger @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “It's funny when clients will be like, just tell me what to do. And I always say to them, I like lean in and I'm like, how does that usually work out for you? When somebody tells you what to do? How does that work out?” @AtaraWeisberger @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “When you go to a 12 step program, like Alcoholics Anonymous, for example, they're always calling you in recovery, even if you've been dry for 20 years. Why? Because that habit pattern is still there. It doesn't really go away. We're just trying to develop parallel tracks to that, and then be aware that that track is over there, but we're going to choose this track instead.” @AtaraWeisberger @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge ————————————————————————— Topics Discussed: What is life & wellness coaching?
