In this episode, the IEA's Emily Carver, Kristian Niemietz and Marc Glendening sit down to discuss the threats posed to free speech by the encroachment of cultural leftism in our institutions. Emily Carver is the Institute of Economic Affairs’ Head of Media, responsible for managing and growing the IEA’s media output. Prior to joining the IEA in October 2019, Emily worked as Policy Adviser to a Conservative MP. Previously, she spent a year at public relations agency, Edelman. She has a degree in modern languages from Bristol University and an MSc in European Politics from the LSE. Dr Kristian Niemietz joined the IEA in 2008 as Poverty Research Fellow, becoming its Senior Research Fellow in 2013, Head of Health and Welfare in 2015 and Head of Political Economy in 2018. Kristian is also a Fellow of the Age Endeavour Fellowship. He studied Economics at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the Universidad de Salamanca, graduating in 2007 as Diplom-Volkswirt. In 2013, he completed a PhD in Political Economy at King’s College London. Marc Glendening is Head of Cultural Affairs at the Institute of Economic Affairs. Before that he worked for Policy Exchange focusing on freedom of speech related issues and the political implications of human rights law. In 2011 he co-founded as political director of the cross-party Democracy Movement, the People’s Pledge. This campaigned for a referendum on the question of EU membership and included politicians and others with contrary views on Brexit.
