Hi! My name is Thakazelo Douw from the International Institute of Digital Marketing. If you have ever shopped online or seen online advertisements, you have encountered recommendation systems. With the continued popularity of Netflix, Amazon, and Spotify, amongst others, recommendation systems can be found almost everywhere online. Examples of recommendation systems are books or clothing on Amazon or movies/shows on Netflix. In this podcast, I will be speaking about the age of marketing personalization. In essence, personalized marketing means using data analytics to tailor the way you sell your products in order to fit the individual needs of your target audience. According to Epsilon research, 80% of consumers are more likely to do business with a company if it offers a personalized experience. Wow! A huge number right? Customers are drawn to brands that meet their expectations and give them what they want. Netflix’s recipe to customize user experience includes using personalization on a large scale for its homepage. Based on the profiles of each user, they customize the homepage to determine how many rows go on the homepage and which shows/movies go into the rows based on the user’s streaming history and preferences. Now let’s move on to Spotify’s use of personalization for a competitive advantage. Spotify has demonstrated a thorough understanding of personalization, with music recommendations and playlists suited to each user. They have recently made use of music stories that recap users’ listening history in a fun and effective way. Examples are the annual #SpotifyWrapped campaign as well as the #OnlyYou campaign. Their aim is to target users in a direct and unique way. They also curate "Daily Mixes" that change every day depending on the type of music the user frequently listens to. E-commerce giant Amazon’s personalization strategy consists of taking into consideration factors such as purchasing history and personal browsing to generate recommendations for each individual customer to help them in finding a product to buy. They ensure that not only does the product suit the customer, but also matches their personality. In conclusion, personalized marketing creates a customer experience rivals can’t easily replicate. This creates a positive experience for its customers which will then lead to customers becoming repeat buyers. Marketers need to tailor their marketing to meet the individual needs and expectations of their customers; this will allow companies to remain relevant in the evolving digital age.
