The story of Michaelangelo carving the statue of "David" is fascinating.  He carved the famous sculpture from a piece of marble he found on a side street in Florence, Italy.  When it was complete, people asked how he did it.  He simply said that he saw "David" in the marble and he just had to remove everything that wasn't "David."
