The 20-year-old gunman who reportedly opened fire on Donald Trump took the rifle from his father on the day of the assassination attempt. Thomas Matthew Crooks allegedly used the AR-15-style rifle at the gun range multiple times before the rally shooting. Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, owned the firearm and let his son use it occasionally.
