What is the best way to respond after we have sinned? It is not unknown for people to love Fr Scupoli solely for chapter 14 of A Treatise on Peace of Soul. Why? He sets before us one of the most helpful and peace-making practices. He shows us what we must do after we sin! The advice he gives is for small sins and big sins, occasional sins and frequent sins, sins of weakness and sins clearly chosen. In summary, he says: Do not be disquieted and depressed. Do not waste time sifting all the circumstances of the fault Be aware of your inherent weakness Turn to God with great confidence, the confidence of children in their infinitely loving Father. At the end of chapter 13, Fr Scupoli gives us some steps in responding to temptations and trials, especially in prayer. More or less he gives these pieces of advice.
