But not all are celebrating: 'Nightmare Alley' found coal in its Christmas stocking. Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home spun a record-breaking web in its box office debut, grossing $260 million from 4,336 theaters to secure the second-biggest domestic opening of all time at the box office despite growing worries over the COVID-19 omicron variant. Monday’s final number of $260 million came in ahead of Sunday’s estimate of $253 million to supplant Avengers: Infinity War as the No. 2 launch ever, not adjusted for inflation. Overseas — where the new variant is even more of a concern in certain markets, and particularly in Europe — the movie also made history, grossing $340.8 million — likewise an uptick over Sunday’s estimate of $334.2 million — for a revised global total of $600.8 million (without China). That’s the No. 3 global opening ever, not adjusted for inflation. “This weekend’s historic results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” says Sony Motion Picture Group chair-CEO Tom Rothman, who has remained a huge proponent of an exclusive theatrical release. Spider-Man: No Way Home set numerous other records as moviegoing returned to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in a defining moment for the box office recovery. Hollywood, however, would feel much better if the wealth were being spread around. Even as No Way Home prospered, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley became the latest adult-skewing title to sorely disappoint, with a fifth-place weekend opening of $3 million despite a well-known director and A-list cast. And Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story tumbled a steep 67 percent in its second weekend, furthering the narrative that midrange movies and adult-skewing films are an endangered species theatrically amid the rise of streaming. No Way Home is the first film in the COVID-19 era to zoom past $100 million in its domestic launch (until now, the biggest start was just $90 million). There’s more: The tentpole has already grossed more than any pandemic-era release has earned in its entire run domestically, a list topped by Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($224.5 million). The Sony and Marvel movie was buoyed by a coveted A+ CinemaScore, moviegoers ages 18-34 and glowing exit scores, including a “definite recommend” score of 90 percent. (Rivals say the exits are “unreal.”) Spider-Man also attracted an ethnically diverse audience and did huge business in Imax theaters, which turned in $36.2 million globally, the No. 6 showing of all time in terms of Imax weekend openings. Avengers: Endgame leads the list of all-time domestic openings with $357 million, followed by Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million) and Jurassic World ($208.8 million), not adjusted for inflation. Internationally, No Way Home is also shattering records despite omicron, which is prompting cinema closures and other restrictions in certain European markets. The movie grossed more than $180 million between Wednesday and Friday alone. No Way Home, reuniting director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland, is from Sony’s Columbia Pictures, which controls the film rights to Spider-Man, and Disney’s Marvel Studios, home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Watts’ film combines three generations of Spider-Man movies and includes previous villain actors Willem Dafoe (2002’s Spider-Man), Alfred Molina (2004’s Spider-Man 2) and Jamie Foxx (2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2). It also stars Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau and Benedict Wong. Dec. 20, 8:15 a.m. Updated with Monday actuals. MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS Doctor Strange 2 Reshoots Include More MCU Cameos https://www.cbr.com/doctor-strange-2-reshoots-more-mcu-cameos/ https://view.email.hollywoodreporter.com/?qs=3c888441338aa39fc68a0073e84973eb4cce7bf3052d1fd33f803738208b397394364b060e878305e292a29609413dd678fb97533169aefa7a261ea80e9d1f8b16a8297c241f5a97 Flinty-eyed Heat Vision readers may recall that we previously wrote about significant reshoots on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Well, in an update on that story, we can tell you that the reshoots are wrapping this week. And we’ve also learned that part of the reshoots may have been spurred by the new Spider-Man movie and the Disney+ Loki series, both of which deal with the multiverse. It seems like Marvel was jazzed by the many actors crossing paths with each other in No Way Home and the playfulness of having alternate versions of characters appear onscreen in Loki. So they decided to have “more fun with the multiverse,” according to one source, and to include more cameos and character introductions in Doctor Strange 2. Will these cameos become MCU canon? Only time, and maybe Kang the Conqueror, will tell. The reshoots for Doctor Strange 2 include even more cameos from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the introduction of new characters as well. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will include more cameos and introduce new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it undergoes reshoots. According to The Hollywood Reporter's "Heat Vision" newsletter, the reshoots for the Doctor Strange sequel will include even more cameos and character introductions than originally intended. While the characters themselves haven't been confirmed, sources report that the film will have "more fun with the multiverse" following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness began "significant" reshoots in November, with Sam Raimi returning to direct the additional material along with writer Michael Waldron, who served as head writer for Marve's Loki Disney+ series. Raimi took over directorial duties from Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film and departed the sequel in September 2020 over creative differences. Star Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Dr. Stephen Strange in the MCU, previously stated that the reshoots will only improve the film. "I'm very excited. Sam Raimi's at the helm, so expect extraordinary things," Cumberbatch said. "And we're in the middle of making it even better. We've got some reshoots coming up in November and December." In a separate interview, Cumberbatch stated that the reshoots were largely a result of logistical issues and restrictions caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. "We're in the middle of reshoots and we're working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film -- bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc," he said. "We were so delayed in production because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower." As for cameos, a new line of action figures for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness offered a first look at the possible introduction of Rintrah to the MCU, an alien minotaur that appeared in Marvel Comics as one of Doctor Strange's apprentices. It was also confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, as the events of WandaVision will tie in directly to the sequel. Olsen wrapped filming on her Doctor Strange reshoots in September. Details surrounding the plot of Doctor Strange 2 remain scarce, though the potential for new characters is vast with the MCU's growing multiverse. Actor Xochitl Gomez is set to make her MCU debut in the film as well, as the Young Avenger America Chavez/Miss America. The MCU faithful were primed to expect the arrival of Natasha Romanoff’s assassin sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), since Black Widow’s post-credits scene outright set up a conflict between her and series lead Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) over her sister’s death in Avengers: Endgame. And more recently, the show’s audience started theorizing about the identity of a mysterious underworld boss, teased in recent episodes. Episode 5 of Hawkeye, “Ronin,” ends the speculation with a single cell-phone picture, confirming the identity of the boss who seems to be behind the story’s main action. British director team Bert & Bertie, who helmed Hawkeye episodes 3, 4, and 5, recently spoke to Polygon about getting the chance to bring that character in. The image of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka underworld crime lord Kingpin, at the end of “Ronin” has big implications for the MCU going forward, since D’Onofrio played the character in the Netflix series Daredevil. Bertie says she and her directorial partner didn’t learn their episodes would be bringing Kingpin back until they were already in production. “That was as exciting to us as it was to the fans, knowing what everyone else would feel,” she says. “It’s like, ‘Oh my goodness, these worlds are now able to meld, and there’s this extra layer that can come into the the MCU that had previously been separate.’” His brief appearance seems to finally confirm that Netflix’s Marvel shows — Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and the crossover miniseries The Defenders — are still canon to the current MCU. (In spite of what Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has said in the past.) That suggests Daredevil and Hawkeye take place in the same version of New York City. But Bertie says Marvel Studios didn’t tell the directors to look back at the older series for visual inspiration or design consistency. “There was never any kind of requirement or need to meld Daredevil and Hawkeye in any way,” she says. As far as portraying Kingpin goes, Bert says they made their directorial choices around Kingpin’s past reputation and presence. “I think you just respect the character, and where the character is in the universe,” she says. “So when Kingpin comes in, he’s massive, you know? He’s huge. As the story goes, he’s later in a more difficult place, but he comes in as his big self, with his big hands. In that picture [at the end of “Ronin”], you see him in his iconic suit. So how to shoot him came from where the character is, rather than us trying to match our universe to anything in the past.” As far as whether the shows are meant to feel similar, Bert says they do have roughly the same aesthetic. “But we deal with the character story more. Rather than dealing with the the universe they come from, they step into ours.” Similarly, the duo didn’t look back to Black Widow to see how to frame or design Yelena — they took cues from Pugh instead. “In terms of consistency of character, Florence had a lot to say about what Yelena might wear to her first proper meeting with [Hailee Steinfeld’s] Kate Bishop as a human, rather than as an assassin character,” Bertie says. “So there’s a thread of character that runs through.” She says that in setting up episode 5’s awkward, extended sit-down between Kate and Yelena over macaroni and cheese, they mostly wanted to respect how different the characters are. “Obviously, this incredibly off-the-wall character that Yelena is was super fresh to the MCU,” Bertie says. “That was something we celebrated. We wanted to see how Kate — naive, wide-eyed, super-smart, fierce, badass in her own way, but learning this whole world — and this very dangerous character, come together. In terms of directing, Marvel are brilliant about encouraging directors to be themselves, to set up the kind of shots we needed to tell this weird yet intimate yet funny story, this emotional girls’ night between two very kick-ass women, just being normal, and a bit insecure, and all of these things women in their 20s can be.” ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Leads 2022 Annie Awards Feature Nominations What If…? “Ultron Won” Nominated for Best Editorial, Television and Media https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/annie-awards-raya-and-the-last-dragon-leads-2022-nominations-1235065364/ https://deadline.com/2021/12/annie-awards-nominations-2022-raya-and-the-last-dragon-encanto-luca-flee-1234899864/ Best Editorial – TV/ Media Amphibia Episode: True Colors Walt Disney Television Animation Jennifer Calbi , David Vasquez, Julie Anne Lau, Yoonah Yim, Andrew Sorcini Arlo the Alligator Boy Episode: Broadcast Special, Netflix Presents A Ryan Crego Film Steve Downs Love, Death + Robots Episode: Pop Squad, Blur Studio for Netflix Julian Clarke, Matt Mariska, Valerian Zamel, Brian Swanson, Ky Kenyon Tom and Jerry in New York Episode: Billboard Jumble, Warner Bros. After being teased in the penultimate episode of Season 1, Vincent D'Onofrio finally returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the finale of Hawkeye, and he shared a message with fans to mark the occasion. To celebrate the last episode of Hawkeye's first season, the show's Twitter account shared a number of videos from the stars. D'Onofrio's Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk, was teased at the end of Episode 5, but the sixth episode sees him step out of the shadows and take on the heroes. And D'Onofrio thanked fans for their enthusiasm about his return to the character following the cancellation of Daredevil on Netflix. "Hello, everybody. Welcome to the season finale of Hawkeye. This is a great show. A lot of effort was put into it by Marvel, by the film crews, the producers, the writers, and all the actors," D'Onofrio said in his message. "So, I hope you enjoy it. And thank you for being so patient waiting all this time for my character. I so appreciate the warm welcome. So enjoy yourself. And Merry Christmas." The thread also features messages from Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Fra Fee (Kazi), and Tracksuit Mafia actors Piotr Adamczyk (Tomas) and Carlos Navarro (Enrique), the latter of which sang a "bro"-filled rendition of a Christmas classic. D'Onofrio arrived to great acclaim as Fisk on the first season of Daredevil, adding new layers to the comic book villain. He'd continue to vex Matt Murdock during his show's three-season run, and fans have long been hoping to see the actor and character pop up in a film or new TV show. While the canon status of Marvel Netflix shows is unknown, Kingpin has officially arrived in the modern MCU. Of course, his fate in the finale is left a mystery, with Maya seeming to shoot him offscreen. But as the moment was inspired by a comic that saw Kingpin survive, and given how long fans have waited for the actor's return, it's safe to assume he won't be gone for long. NETFLIX DEFENDERS Jessica Henwick Discusses Colleen Wing’s Possible Marvel Future https://www.superherohype.com/movies/509494-jessica-henwick-discusses-colleen-wings-possible-marvel-future It turns out the role she was up for was of Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing, which ultimately went to relative unknown Meng’er Zhang. But had she taken such a major role, with clear spinoff potential, it would have definitely meant no more for Iron Fist‘s Colleen Wing. Marvel has double-cast some actors before, like Mahershala Ali and Gemma Chan, but in every instance, one of the characters was either minor or died. And Henwick didn’t want Colleen Wing to go that way. “If I did [Shang-Chi], I would effectively be putting Colleen to bed,” she revealed. “It wasn’t the main factor, but it definitely came up in conversation. I love Colleen. She changed my life. Of course, if I was given the opportunity to revisit her, I would, but I just don’t know how likely that is…I think I would have heard by now if there were any plans with Colleen.” The Marvel shows on Netflix began as canon with the movies, then later became unofficial. However, Marvel Netflix characters coming back as new versions of themselves in the MCU seems to be a new trend. Vincent D’Onofrio just returned as Kingpin, and Kevin Feige recently talked up Charlie Cox’s Daredevil. According to Henwick, though, those actors knew for quite a while. “Charlie knew about that opportunity years ago. He already knew it was happening,” she says.
