074. Listener request: The marketing and advertising of sugar

Life After Sugar - A podcast by Netta - Sundays

Categories:

This episode comes from a request from a listener who asked me to talk about how  advertising from the sugar industry has made us believe that sugar is a good source of energy... a necessary part of our daily diet... natural... an appetite suppressant(!) and a way to lose weight(!!)... There are the ads from the 50s, 60s and 70s for example, where sugar was marketed as a healthy substance that would curb hunger and provide an energy boost. Of course, we know different now!Why did sugar and its substitutes even need advertising? Well, one reason was that sugar was rationed during the Second World War, and the sugar industry needed to do something about that type of restriction so that they could get more sales. Today, we know that sugar is unhealthy and its advertising has been shown to be deceptive. But the sugar industry is now joined by the sweetener industry, especially for keto sweeteners, to convince consumers that their products are pure and healthy... and that we need them in our lives. As smart consumers, we need to be aware of these marketing ploys.
