Robert McCollum is an 85 year old Navy Veteran with some amazing experiences and wisdom to share with us from his long and eventful life. He has the honor of being named Mt. Soledad’s Veteran of the Year for 2020. Over the course of his career in the Navy, he has served as a Navy recruiter domestically and abroad in Germany, a torpedoman, and a launcher technician. Following his career in the Navy, he took the position of Director at 5 National Cemeteries in the United States. Following his retirement, he moved to and has now lived in San Diego, California for 15 years where he serves as a volunteer at the Mt. Soledad Memorial. In their discussion, Brian and Robert talk about the experience of living completely submerged in a submarine for 2 months at a time, the value of honor, integrity, respect, and professionalism, Robert’s experience of losing his wife to heart attack, the importance of enjoying your life, and why we ought to preserve the memory of our nation’s heroes and those who have sacrificed for our freedom. Life’s Best Medicine According to Robert: “Dream as if you’ll live forever and live like you will die today. Whatever your heart tells you to do, do it! But whatever you do, just do the best job you can. Enjoy this beautiful world that we live in. Forge ahead and forget anything bad that might have happened in your past and look ahead to a glorious future—attack it, attack it, attack it!” Thank you for listening.
