Draw near through a better hope

Live to Love Scripture Encouragement - A podcast by Norm Wakefield

Hebrews 7:17-19 For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Today we rejoice in the hope of eternal life and constant access to God through Jesus Christ. The Scriptures witness to Christ that God has appointed Him to be a priest on the order of Melchizedek, that is, on the order of an indestructible life. In so doing, God set aside the uselessness of the first system of worship, which couldn’t perfect anyone or anything, and brought in a better system filled with hope because it is based on Jesus’ life. This is what encourages us today to draw near to God for mercy and grace when we need help. We draw near through a better hope than what the Jews had to do to draw near to God through the priesthood according to the Law. The Law made nothing perfect, but Jesus made us perfect in the eyes of God. Let’s jump ahead to 10:14. “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” My dear friends, we operate out of the fullness of the work of Jesus Christ. We are complete in Him, as Paul wrote to the Colossians. So let’s take great caution to not attempt to live our lives in our own strength according to the weak, useless elementary principles of the world system and that which the Hebrews labored under. Draw near to God moment by moment through the better hope we have in Christ Jesus.
