God is our source of being—true biblical patriarchy

Live to Love Scripture Encouragement - A podcast by Norm Wakefield

Hebrews 2:9-11 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. For both He (that’s Jesus) who sanctifies and those who are sanctified (all believers) are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, The author was explaining how fitting or clear it is that God, contrary to the appearance of things, that all things are not subject to Jesus, would display that even death itself has been subjected to His Son. This, of course, required that Jesus suffer, but by the grace of God, the suffering of death was only temporary. He only had to taste death in order to complete the work God sent Him to do as the savior, sanctifier and glorifier of His brethren. God crowned Him with glory and honor as Jesus completed the work needed to save them. We are encouraged in this verse first, that God is the Father of Jesus as well as all who believe. We both, the One who sets His brothers apart to God and makes them holy, and the brothers, originate from the same source. Second, since we originated from the Father, we have confidence that ultimately we will be with the Father forever. Remember we just learned in the previous verse that all things (Jesus and His brethren and everything that pertains to them) are for and through the Father. Third, Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brethren because we are given to Him by the Father. We see this explicitly stated in the verse 13, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.” Jesus’ readiness to associate with us isn’t based on our performance or righteousness. He is with us now and in the forever future because we have been His from eternity. The apostle Paul wrote Timothy of this reality. 2 Tim. 1:9, speaking about God, “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity.” We live to love with an awareness and faith resting on this great eternal love of God for us. We are from God, and so we find our life, satisfaction, and fullness in Him. May we live today in the security and confidence that we are loved by God as brothers of Jesus Christ, the Son, from all eternity. We don’t need others to give significance and meaning to our lives. We already have it in Christ! God is our source of being. Our source of identity. This is true biblical patriarchy. We are liberated to live, love, and give to everyone God puts in our paths each day.
