How do you love God whom you cannot see?

Live to Love Scripture Encouragement - A podcast by Norm Wakefield

1 John 4:20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. I want to encourage us today to live to love with Jesus by flipping this verse from the negative to the positive. See if this resonates with you. The one who loves his brother whom he can see, loves God whom he cannot see. This reality is echoed in a number of Scriptures such as Jesus’ parable about the sheep who ministered to “one of the least of these, my brothers.” They were, in reality, ministering to Jesus. Another example is when Jesus revealed Himself to Saul, later known as the apostle Paul. Jesus asked Saul, “Why do you persecute me?” Jesus wanted Saul to know that when he persecuted the members of His body, whom he could see, that he was persecuting Him, whom He could not see. One who loves God, loves everyone born of God. They have the same Father in heaven, therefore, they love each other out of love for their Father. Two verses from this verse, John wrote, 1 John 5:1 “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.” We’ll be encouraged more from that verse on Tuesday, but for now, let’s know for sure that someone who hates a child of God doesn’t love God. The two are incompatible. As the apostle John wrote, “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.” How do you know you are of the Spirit of truth and not the spirit of error? How do you know if you love God whom you cannot now see? You love everyone born of Him whom you can see. You love your brothers and sisters in Christ with Him.
