We died to sin.

Live to Love Scripture Encouragement - A podcast by Norm Wakefield

Romans 6:2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Wow! What a question in response to the question, “Shall we continue in sin that grace might increase?” Let’s follow Paul’s incredible and insightful line of reason. Is it possible for someone who died to sin to still live in it? When a person on the earth dies to this world, they quit breathing and leave this domain. However, they do not quit existing nor are they reincarnated into another life form as some suggest. We know this because eye witnesses saw Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah (Matthew 17:3 “And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him). So Paul introduced a very important identity principle in this chapter—union with Jesus. The following verses will unpack this wonderful truth, but for now, I encourage us to consider Paul’s foundational thought. We died to sin. Like a man dies on this earth and no longer lives in the domain of this world, we died to sin, and no longer live in the domain of sin. Living in sin is the exact opposite of living to love with Jesus. Living to love with Jesus by abiding in Him makes sinning impossible. The apostle John wrote in 1 John 3:6, “No one who abides in Him sins.” John wasn’t teaching that we can reach perfection in this world, but he was stating the same thing that Jesus taught when He taught His disciples that if they would abide in Him they would bear much fruit, for apart from Him they can do nothing (John 15:5). When we abide in Jesus and live in and with Him, we won’t sin, but when we aren't abiding in Him (which he said occurs to all of us 1:8), we will sin. I hope you’ll abide in Jesus today and love with Him those God puts in your path. Remember you have died to living in this world for yourself. We will learn more in the days to come about what it means to be identified with Jesus. Acknowledgment: Music from “Carried by the Father” by Eric Terlizzi. www.ericterlizzi.com
