We know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.

Live to Love Scripture Encouragement - A podcast by Norm Wakefield

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. What commandments does John have in mind? Maybe it’s what he’s already said. 1 John 3:23 This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. So today we love Him by loving His children. We show our faith in Jesus, who commanded His disciples to love one another as He loved them, by obeying Him and loving with Him. How does observing God’s commandments help us to know that we love the children of God? The love of Christ for God’s children wasn’t based on feelings or on anything in them. His love is the sustained direction of His will toward the highest good of God’s children, no matter what the cost. It is a choice of the will to obey His Father’s command to lay down His life for them. Loving God and His children is commanded by God. It is in our highest good that we love out of obedience, trusting in the enabling power of the Spirit of the Son of God, whom we have received. In this way, God is glorified, and we fulfill our highest purpose, which is our highest and greatest good. We know that we love the children of God because our hearts have been changed by the new DNA implanted within us, and we love God and keep His commandments. As we live to love with Jesus, we know we love the children of God.
