It will come as no surprise that in the late 19th century, people who had any kind of disability were treated differently. Those who had health conditions or impairments often faced social ostracization, couldn’t get jobs and often found themselves down and out without any prospects, and in a cut throat Victorian oppressive society, this meant that life could be a very uncomfortable ride.But, for one man, he used the public fascination in his disability to his advantage to make a living, but sadly his story descended into a raw and tragic tale of Victorian exploitation, one which would end in an untimely death.Today on Macabre London, we’ll be uncovering the tale of Joseph Merrick, The Elephant man.
