In the strange story of the great darshan (teachers of meaning, relevance and ethics in the Torah) Rabbi Simlai asking Rabbi Yochanan to teach him the methodology with which to learn the Midrashic background to the Book of Chronicles, we learn the character requirements of a Torah student. These characteristics are important for the way s/he will understand the content and extrapolate its meaning and application.
