Similarly to a body scan, Progressive Muscle Relaxations guide us through scanning over the body to increase awareness of how our muscles feel. This particular practice adds in an intentional engagement and relaxation of the muscles. This teaches the brain and the body how tense muscles compare to relaxed muscles so we can better notice when it would be beneficial to engage in stress-reduction activities.
