Today my guest is Munira Mahmoud, a woman with a very fascinating life story. Originally from Uganda, Munira experienced the loneliness of motherhood here in the UK which was a stark contrast to the ancient traditions she grew up around back home, where home cooked food was an essential part of maternal care. Munira’s own struggle with early motherhood inspired an idea to create Kina Mama, a social enterprise which would offer support to new mothers through food and sisterhood, just like she saw back home.
The real turning point in Munira’s life was the Grenfell tower fire in June 2017, which she survived together with her husband and their two children. So in the aftermath of the fire, she came together with several fellow survivors, to start cooking food from their native countries at their local Mosque. This was the start of the Hubb Community Kitchen, which became a real heartbeat of their community, providing a sense of home to so many. Their work got noticed by Megan Markle and led to the creation of the Together Cookbook, which features Munira’s story and recipes. It was the conversation with the Duchess that inspired Munira to pursue her initial idea of setting up a support system for new mothers which soon became, Kina Mama.
