In this episode, we interview Dr Rachel Reed and talk to her about the research she has done on medical intervention and induction of labour and birth. Rachel is a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery and Discipline Lead of Midwifery at the University of the Sunshine Coast. In all areas of her work Rachel is committed to the promotion of physiological birth, and of women’s rights (and rites) in maternity care. Rachel's research focuses on women’s experiences of maternity care with the aim of foregrounding women’s needs and rights in the development of maternity services and practice. Rachel has been published widely – in books, journals and magazines; and her publications have been cited in midwifery textbooks and clinical guidelines. Rachel is also the author of the MidwifeThinking blog Rachel is an experienced presenter and is regularly invited to speak at events and facilitate workshops. Her professional engagement activities have included consultancy on midwifery education; providing expert opinion on legal cases, and membership of working parties developing clinical guidelines and consumer information. This episode is a juicy one and we both had some mind-blowing moments on how she describes our current maternity system here in Australia and how they approach induction.
