She brought it home to the US and studied the effects of touch on infants. In 1976 she had her first baby and massaged him every day. Observing her baby closely, she changed the routine from India and eventually she designed a course and began teaching parents. Her classes grew and she wrote her first book, Infant Massage a Handbook for Loving Parents, which was published by Bantam Books. She designed a course for people who wanted to teach and wrote the Infant Massage Instructor Manual. After training the first group of instructors, she founded the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM). Eventually she trained some of those instructors to be Trainers of instructors, making IAIM worldwide. Vimala has updated and expanded her book several times, to keep it relevant for modern times.
