William Massena is a legendary figure in the world of watches. From Timezone to Antiquorum and his own venture Massena Labs, he’s done it all. From what it was like loving watches growing up in Geneva, and how Timezone changed the watch industry, why collectors need to stop fawning over watch brands and what it was like trying to get into Baselworld when the internet was seen as the wild west. Massena also gives us his (typically sensible) take on watches as investments. These days, of course, William is best known for Massena Lab, a collaborative laboratory that creates watches that are a fusion and old and new. His latest creation is the Uni-Racer, a loving homage to a classic Universal Geneve, but made in a painstakingly modern way. We break down the thorny issues of originality, intent and authenticity in the watch space, issues around hype in the watch market and how William has evolved from an anti-brand guy into a brand in his own right. This episode is brought to you by NOMOS Glashütte, who recently launched a series of limited edition Lambda watches in steel to celebrate 175 years of watchmaking in Glashütte.
