11. NHS - Jelena, Doctor, Essex

Unlike many other foreign nationals who join the NHS, Jelena came here for reasons other than her own professional advancement. In fact, it was her husband’s ambitions of working in the motorsports industry which brought her here. Jelena thus found herself struggling to adapt to a new environment and a new culture, initially describing herself as a “smiling penguin” as she struggled to gain the confidence to understand and speak in English.
