Punishments Vs Limits

It can get confusing when it comes to trying to set limits without the use of punishments or rewards. How do we get our kids to do “x’ and what happens if they don’t? What can we “do” instead of using a punishment or a reward? Do we just let them do whatever they want and stand by and watch?
