We review the 2004 film, Ultraman The Next (but we also forgot to capture the moment)! This month’s discussion film is Tsuburaya Production’s 2004 cinematic reboot attempt of Ultraman, known in English as Ultraman The Next. Big thanks to everyone who sent in their homework for this apparently difficult to track down film. I was joined in the studio by regulars Martin, Bryan and Rachel, but we did have another voice from the past come back to join in the fun. Long time Ultra-fan Dave Helfrey (aka Baron Von Goolo – who’s Kaijucastic debut was waaaaay back in episode #19) was able to sit down and talk about this cinematic shuwatch. This film was one that I had seen back when it came out, but I don’t have any behind-the-scene materials on hand. Big thanks to Brad Warner, who worked at Tsuburaya in the late nineties for agreeing to chat with me about the film and what was happening at the Tsuburaya during that time – I can’t wait to have him appear on a future episode! We did talk about some news, cover some catastrophic events and have an exciting round pickled ginger. And, of course, we played some music in the episode. MONSTEROUS MUSIC: 1. Main Title by Kan Ishii from Gorath (1962) 2. NEVER GOOD-BYE by TMG from Ultraman The Next (2004) 3. Ultraman The Next teaser audio (2004) 4. Main Theme by Kuniyo Miyauchi from Ultraman (1966) 5. Theme of Ultraman by Takahiro Matsumoto from Ultraman The Next (2004) SUGGESTED READING: Godzilla: Rulers of Earth to end its run with issue #25 CATASTROPHIC EVENTS: 3/13 – 3/15 Lexington Comic Con w/Reiko Chiba, Takumi Hashimoto, Y?ta Mochizuki, Hiroko Sakurai & Satoshi “Bin” Furuya 3.27 – 3/29 Monsterpalooza w/Sonny Chiba in Burbank, CA DAIKAIJU DISCUSSION: Our next film in the discussion series is the 1991 entry into the Godzilla series, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. This film is a big favorite amongst the fans and it’s widely available, so please help us out and refrain from sending in that mini-novella you’ve always wanted to write for the eighteenth Godzilla film in the franchise. Keep it short and simple and send in your homework before February 20th to be included in the discussion episode.
