Buchanan is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine, and the Chief Surgical Officer at the Texas Children's Hospital in Austin, Texas. He completed a residency in Plastic Surgery at Stanford University medical Center, and a craniofacial fellowship at University of Washington in Seattle. He has a practice focused on cleft lip and palate care, cranial vault remodeling and pediatric oncologic head and neck reconstruction with microsurgery and craniofacial techniques. He is also an author and has written four children's books with his brother, Matthew Buchanan.
