Psychopedia - A podcast by Tank Sinatra & Investigator Slater - Wednesdays

In an act that defied all notions of humanity and sanity, a 19-year-old college student named Austin Harrouff viciously stabbed and cannibalized an innocent couple living in Jupiter, Florida. When police arrived at the horrific scene in August of 2016, Austin was discovered swallowing and spitting out chunks of flesh from one of his victim's faces in an act so horrific, that it seemed to be the manifestation of the darkest depths of human depravity.  This grotesque display of violence, however, cannot be detached from the significant role that Austin's mental health played in precipitating these brutal actions. Prior to this devastating event, there were indicators of Austin's deteriorating psychological state, hinting at a profound struggle within. This devastating case forces us to confront questions about the intersection of mental illness and extreme violence, and urges a deeper examination of how society addresses mental health, particularly among the youth, and the mechanisms in place to prevent such tragedies from unfolding.
