Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics book 4 - The Quasi-Virtue Of Shame - Sadler's Lectures

Sadler's Lectures - A podcast by Lectures on classic and contemporary philosophical texts and thinkers by Gregory B. Sadler

Categories:

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics Specifically it focuses upon his discussion of a feeling or emotion (pathos) that is not itself a virtue, but does have a mean or middle position, in book 4. This morally relevant emotion is that of shame(aidos), and Aristotle tells us why the virtuous person will feel shame only "by hypothesis", and how this differs from the shameless person. He also discusses why shame is appropriate for younger people, but not for older people.
