This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On The Ends, which discusses problems and perspectives on happiness, ethics, and human nature Specifically it examines his discussion in book 1 about the Epicurean evaluation of the virtues as only instrumentally good. Here we focus on the virtue of justice. Epicureans value justice partly for instrumental reasons, like keeping oneself from getting into trouble, or fearing that one's unjust actions will be uncovered and punished. but they also view injustice as involving a conflict within the human person, which stands in the way of a tranquil life.
