This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher and critic, Giles Deleuze's essay,"Bartleby, Or The Formula", found in his Essays Critical and Clinical. Deleuze's essay examines Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby The Scrivner". This lecture focuses specifically on the notions of primary and secondary nature Deleuze makes central to interpretation of Melville, which then bears upon the three main types of characters: demonic megalomaniacs (Ahab, Clagart), angelic hypochondriacs (Bartleby, Billy Budd), and prophets (Captain Vere, the Attorney), the first two of which can be "Originals", ways in which primary nature erupts into secondary nature.
