Should You Renovate a Property Yourself or Hire a Builder?

A number of my property friends are personally doing the painting etc, or coordinating tradespeople - rather than hiring a main contractor. I just wanted to make a comment on this, based on one of my bad experiences in the past... What are your thoughts? Do you prefer to do the work yourself?
