Make sure to put people before profit. At the end of the day, that’s what marketing honestly boils down too. It’s a simple idea in theory. But, if you’re honest with yourself, it’s actually a tough idea to practice. “But, Chris!” You say, “Of course I would always put people before profit.” Well, hold on. What if you’ve been working really hard to build your web design business and all of a sudden you’re presented with an option to fudge the truth a little bit and land a huge project? There was a time in my own web design business when I was working on a modest project that made a decent amount of money. And, all of a sudden I was presented with a whale. Do you know what a whale is? A whale is the kind of project that only comes along once in a life time. It’s a really easy job that you’re going to get paid a lot of money for. The problem was I couldn’t say yes to the whale and still hold to the timelines I had promised my current client. So, what do I do? It’s in moments like these that our integrity is challenged. The easy route would be to say yes to the whale and neglect my current client. The route that takes more integrity would be to turn it down to keep my promises. The truth is when you decide to make your customer the priority your business will grow. It will take longer but it will be worth it. I don’t know about you BUT to me it’s more important that I build something that is more about others than myself. So, I’m thankful for Brad’s honesty. And, I’m so thankful for the insight he had to share on the show.
