On July 7th, 1940, hundreds of Jewish refugees gathered in front of the one remaining consulate left open in Lithuania, as the Nazis advanced eastward.  They had no particular reason to believe the ambassador of the Japanese Empire would save them from certain death, but they had to try.  Chiune Sugihara did not let them down.
