Hiring the right people Step 7: How To Onboard a New Employee Like a Pro

In this episode of SYS Hiring the Right People, Steve talks about how he on boards a new employee and the benefits of taking the time and effort to do this well. This is an essential step to ensure they become a productive team member as soon as possible, but it also creates and sets the tone for building a trusting, strong and long lasting relationship.   KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s worth spending the time and effort in on boarding your new employee. You want to start the relationship off on a high and give yourself a stable platform to build on. One of the first steps you can do is send them an email where you invite them into a welcome meeting as well as getting them on your task managing software. You can also use this email to include all necessary info they will need to get started, such as their contract, manager info etc. It is also worth outlining your expectations, in terms of hours of work, communication and company policies too. Next you want the staff member to set up all the systems they will need to use, in a sense they are on boarding themselves. It saves you time and means they will gain some confidence and experience within the systems. You can ask the employee to complete all training before they start. It’s as simple as giving them training videos showing them how to use systems, how to communicate etc. It means you will create the video once and you can use that again and again with any new hire. Then, when they have their first day, they are all set-up and know how things work already. It makes you look very professional and efficient as a company as well as saving you time and money. Structured weekly 121s are invaluable. Not just in a work-related sense but by providing a space that if an employee needs to talk about something they can. This builds trust and a great base for a strong and long-lasting relationship.   BEST MOMENTS  “You don’t want this person to leave in 2 months’ time and go off and find another job…you want them to stick around because of that investment of time you spent on them” “When you are everything in your business these are often the last things you think about” “Having the space, the opportunity to let that person let you know what’s on their mind pays back in dividends for building trust and long-lasting relationships”   VALUABLE RESOURCES   SYS Recruitment Series Resources: Bit.ly/sys-10   Facebook Group: Systems and Outsourcing Systems and Outsourcing Website YouTube Dr. Steve Day   ABOUT THE HOST Steve used to be a slave to his business but when he moved to Sweden in 2015, he was forced to change the way he worked.
